Female Only

Can't really recall when was the last time I looked at the Classified page. In fact, I never thought that I would ever need to look at the Employment section again especially after I have joined the teaching profession. Since I'm not ready to return to teaching in school as yet and I'm living in a society where cash is king, I have to do something to get the cash coming in. Looked at the section that interest me most, 'Lecturing/Teaching' and found some positions that I seen qualify for. Made some calls and was taken aback by the responses that I received. I called up 3 Student Care centres that are looking for a 'Before n After School' teacher. The first centre told me that they were looking for somebody younger, the other 2 were looking for a female teacher. Actually one of them didn't said they wanted only female but hinted that theirs was a female working environment. I replied that I didn't mind working in one but I guessed they did. Next I went on to call up some tuition agencies to ask for assignments and again was told that female tutors are more in demand. I knew that all along the teaching profession has been a female dominated sector but I didn't expect it to be so in the private tuition business as well. Maybe it was so some 20 years ago but I wasn't prepared to face such biased thinking in a 'everybody is equal' society of today. Or was I just being naive to expect to be treated on par with my female counterpart? Do parents prefer female tutors to male ones because the former are better teacher than the latter? Or are they just being sexist? Could that be the reason why most guys are staying away from the profession? I certainly hope that that isn't really their mindset as I have known of male teachers who are just as good, if not better, as some female teachers. Anyway, I expect present day parents who are generally more educated to also be more liberal-minded and more accommodating towards male teacher like me or I would really have to quit teaching completely. But if I were to do that what else can I do? Do you know of any broad-minded and unbiased parents who would be willing to accept me for what I am?
